Lettuce Back on Michigan Menus Following Decline in Cyclospora Cases

On Thursday, the Michigan Department of Health announced that lettuce and salad greens can be consumed again, as cases of Cyclospora have declined.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services stated that a significant decline in new cases of cyclosporiasis has been observed; everyone can resume their normal diet and make decisions based on their own tolerance.

Since June, 12,485 cases of cyclosporiasis have been reported, resulting in 279 hospitalizations and two confirmed deaths; however, the agency has noted a significant decline in emergency department visits related to diarrhea.

The Michigan Department of Health said on Thursday that most of the contaminated products are no longer available, but residents should take precautions regarding the iceberg lettuce recalled from Taylor Farms de Mexico.

According to Health Department records, cases have been reported across 15 states so far. The CDC has recorded over 6,000 cases associated with this outbreak; of these, 300 individuals required hospitalization, and two deaths have been confirmed.

Experts also state that the data on reported cases confirms the outbreak was already widespread, rather than indicating that its scope is currently expanding.
